Quick Notes before jumping to how to use Long Tail Keywords

Here I want you to note down some of the very important points about long-tail keywords before jumping to learn how to use them.

Does really number of words matter to be a long tail keyword?

No, not really a long tail keyword means a keyword which has low search volume with very low competition. A number of words do not matter always.

For example, you can think of a brand name like prodigyowl, or moz SEO. These are brands thus have less competition as well as less search volume.

But most of the time they are three or more than three words long to be focused on one part of a broad topic.

Does lesser search volume indicate you can rank easily?

No, lesser search volume does not always indicate that keyword is easy to rank upon. If you are selecting your long-tail keywords on the basis of less search volume, then you are doing a huge mistake. There are keywords which are having lesser search volume but higher competition.

The reason for having low search volume but higher competition will be explained later in this article.

Do always long variations of headwords are lesser competitive than parent word?

No, there are some instances where longer variation incorporates more competition than parent headword. As you can see below in the picture.

greater search volume of long tail keyword than parent headword

Basic understanding of long-tail keywords before learning how to use long-tail keyword

Here to adopt an effective SEO strategy you should have a basic understanding of two categories of long-tail keywords.

  • Focused Long-Tail Keywords
  • Non-Focused or supporting long-tail keywords

Focused Long-Tail Keywords

Focused long-tail keywords are those keywords which are a complete topic in itself or they are more focused in terms of their meaning.

For example, let’s see this keyword ” increase traffic by long-tail SEO”. The user intent behind this keyword is the way to increase organic traffic via long-tail SEO technique. Hence this keyword is more focused and is topic in itself

Non-focused or supporting long-tail keywords

There are also long-tail keywords which are non-focused or supporting to their parent head keywords.

For example, let’s see this list of keywords

  1. Increase traffic to your website
  2. Best way to increase traffic to your website
  3. Beginners guide to increase traffic to your website
  4. 5 easy methods to increase traffic to your website
  5. Follow this guide to increase traffic to your website

You can see that all these long-tail keywords are supportive to the parent headword “increase organic traffic”. Therefore these keywords are supporting long-tail keywords.

Why some long-tail keywords offer high competition instead of low search volume?

Now it’s time to answer the above-raised question. That is why some long-tail keywords offer high competition instead of low search volume?

The answer is, those keywords are supporting or non-focused long-tail keywords. Basically supporting keyword represent the same thing as parent head keyword does. Therefore when a user search using supporting long-tail keywords it means he is searching for something very famous in a less famous way.

Its search volume is less because this exact search query is used lesser time. But competition is very high because this query is basically about heavy competitive parent headword which is a broader topic.

If still, you are not able to grab the concept, let’s understand it using the example that I have given above.

  1. Increase traffic to your website
  2. Best way to increase traffic to your website
  3. Beginners guide to increase traffic to your website
  4. 5 easy methods to increase traffic to your website
  5. Follow this guide to increase traffic to your website

Parent keyword is “increase organic traffic”

Let’s say this parent keyword is more competitive and have a high search volume around 100k. But the search volume of those above listed five long-tail keywords is let’s say a few hundred.

It means basically users used those five long versions with the intent to get results for “increase organic traffic” a few hundred times. But a lot of times people used the exact keyword “increase organic traffic”. Therefore these five long-tail keywords faced direct competition from parent headword because of being same in meaning. Hence volume is low but competition is high.

Choosing a Right long-tail keyword

Before optimizing your article for the chosen long-tail keyword, it is very important to choose the right long-tail keyword. How will you do that?

Here is a simple formula

  • If it is a brand new website, try to target a focused long-tail keyword.
  • If the website has enough authority you can go for supporting long-tail keywords

So the first step should be to classify keywords as focused and supporting keywords.

If you can’t determine between focused and supporting keywords, then follow this

  • Type the keyword into Google search bar
  • Observe the search results that are shown. Look if they are on more generic topic or on a focused one.
  • If they are on more generic topic keyword is broad hence supporting keyword.
  • If it is focused that means the keyword is focused keyword

Note: It should be noted that for supporting long-tail keywords results shown will contain parent headword most of the time. But for focused long-tail keywords searched keyword will act as a parent keyword.

How to use long-tail keywords, focused ones

Let’s first understand how will you rank for focused long-tail keywords.

You can rank for a focused keyword easily by creating a lot of pages dedicated to each focused long-tail keyword. By doing this you are more detailed and comprehensive over each keyword.

This will also let you index more pages or contents in search engines. And we know website having a lot of content ranks better in Google.

Steps to use long-tail keyword in a blog post

  1. Write an appealing title using the long-tail keyword at the beginning of the title.
  2. Include keyword at least two times in the introduction.
  3. Write proper subheading using the keyword.
  4. Sprinkle keyword and related keywords all over the post naturally, do not stuff it.

This way you can use long-tail keywords in your blog post.

How to use long-tail keywords, non-focused ones

If you have decided to use non-focused keywords, it means you are going to compete for that keyword.

For your better knowledge, I want to make it clear that to compete for your website should have enough Authority, backlinks, user base and high-quality content.

Tip: When choosing between two non-focused keywords having the same meaning or same user intent always choose the one which is having greater search volume. Otherwise, try to rank for parent headword.

supporting long tail keywords
supporting long-tail keywords of same difficulty level

Observe the picture above and try to understand why I said to compete for a keyword which has a larger search volume.

You can see that, keywords are having same user intent or meaning that is to “learn SEO”. So all these keywords will have direct competition with the parent keyword ” learn SEO”.

Now if you rank for low search volume keyword, you will get lesser traffic facing the same competition as much as the parent headword “learn SEO” is facing.

Instead of that if you would have chosen parent headword “learn SEO” you would have got more traffic.

Now optimize your post for the chosen keyword.

In the end, I want to say that SEO is not all about keyword optimization in your post. There is a lot more to be done to rank on top.

Tell me your response in the comment box and don’t hesitate to share it.
